You might have heard your clinician speaking about ‘laser therapy’ as a potential treatment to help you with an ache or an injury you are struggling with. If so, you may have questions such as, “what is laser therapy?”, “how does laser therapy work?” and maybe more importantly, “will laser therapy hurt?”! We’re going to answer all your questions in this blog. Firstly – what is laser therapy?
Therapeutic laser utilises the power of light, usually infra-red or near-infrared, to stimulate the cells in your body. Your clinician/therapist will use their laser over the area of pain or injury delivering light directly to the cells. So how does laser therapy work? When certain cells (mostly cytochrome c oxidase) absorb the light from a therapeutic laser there is an increase in energy (ATP) at a cellular level meaning the cells work harder to heal damaged tissues. Think of laser as being like a can of Red Bull or an espresso coffee for your cells – it safely and effectively allows them function at a higher level, doing their jobs more efficiently. In addition to this, research has shown that laser can reduce and slow down the ‘pain messages’ in your nerves so you feel less pain and it also helps to reduce the number of pro-inflammatory cells in the area treated, resulting in a reduction in inflammatory processes. For swelling, laser helps to stimulate the lymphatic system to flush through fluid, reducing oedema. Laser also helps to increase the circulation to the area it’s used on leading to an increase in supply of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues. As you can tell, laser works in lots of different ways to get you feeling better faster! Will laser therapy hurt? No! Laser therapy should not be painful. There are lots of different laser devices and all clinicians should have been properly trained in the safe use of the one they have. At Teesside Podiatry Clinic we are fully trained in the use of MLS®️ Laser Therapy which is a non-thermal laser - this means there is absolutely no risk of any harmful effects. The MLS® device uses a patented laser pulse technology to deliver high power completely safely, meaning we can give you extremely effective yet completely safe treatments. What can laser therapy be used for? Our MLS®️ laser is used to treat all kinds of aches and pains. If you have any form of pain, inflammation, swelling or tissue damage, laser could be a very helpful treatment option for you. Laser can be useful in the treatment of: Tendonitis Plantar Fasciitis Arthritis Bursitis Swelling/oedema Sprains/strains Back pain Sciatica Wounds In today’s blog, we’ll take a deep dive into the Achilles tendon. We’ll explore the afflictions relating to the Achilles, the differences between Achilles tendonitis and tendinopathy, and introduce the Achilles laser treatments available at Teesside Podiatry Clinic. Let’s begin by looking at the different Achilles conditions, before examining the treatments in more detail. What is Achilles tendonitis?Achilles tendonitis is a painful condition that affects different parts of the Achilles tendon. People use the terms tendonitis and tendinopathy interchangeably, but there are some key differences between the two. What’s the difference between Achilles tendonitis and tendinopathy?Generally speaking, the term ‘tendonitis’ is used when the pain is more acute, and when there is also inflammation of the Achilles tendon. On the flipside, ‘tendinopathy’ or ‘tendinosis’ both refer to more chronic, degenerative changes within the tendon structure. Without proper treatment, all of the above are extremely painful and dangerous in the long term. The other kinds of Achilles injuries. As well as Achilles tendonitis and tendinopathy, lots of patients suffer from something known as ‘insertional’ Achilles pain. This is different to the other conditions, and it’s felt right at the back of the heel where the tendon inserts into the bone. Patients might also suffer from ‘mid portion’ pain which affects the area higher up the tendon, midway between the heel and where the tendon and muscle join. The treatments for each condition are different, which is why it’s important that you get a proper diagnosis to ensure you receive appropriate treatment. With this in mind, let’s explore the different kinds of Achilles treatments available, and where you can get them in the Teesside area. What are the different treatments for Achilles tendonitis?Depending on what your podiatrist finds during an assessment and subsequent diagnosis, treatment options for Achilles-related issues can include the following:
At Teesside Podiatry Clinic, we can implement all of the above, but we also have an MLS® laser, which can be a very helpful addition to your treatment plan. How does the MLS® laser work? The MLS® laser is incredibly advanced and helps to reduce pain, swelling and inflammation of your Achilles injury. It also helps accelerate your body’s natural healing process, which can be a massive boost for your recovery. To do its job so effectively, the MLS® laser delivers two wavelengths, 808nm and 905nm, in a synchronised manner. The 808nm wavelength targets tissue repair and regeneration, and the 905nm wavelength has an analgesic effect which targets pain and inflammation. This means laser treatment can help to quickly calm down pain and quicken your recovery. The MLS® laser can be used on any type of Achilles tendon issues and is completely painless, which means it’s a pleasant treatment to receive. Because the stronger 905nm wavelength is nano pulsed (meaning it pulses on and off rapidly), any risk of thermal damage to your tissue is removed, and the laser is completely safe to use. In addition to the above, the MLS® laser treatments delivered by Teesside Podiatry Clinic can also mean that there’s no need to change your activity levels after treatment. This is, of course, unless activity modification has been recommended as part of your treatment plan. We’ll cover the reasons you might need to have toenail surgery, what toenail surgery involves, where to get toenail surgery, and how much it costs. Let’s jump straight in with a definition of what toenail surgery actually is, before tackling the other topics. What is toenail surgery?Toenail surgery is, unsurprisingly, surgery carried out on one or more toenails. It can come in many forms, and the term covers everything from surgery for toenail avulsion, ingrown toenails, toe infections, and toenail removal. Why might I need toenail surgery?Issues with toenails can be extremely uncomfortable at best, and debilitating at worst. If you suffer from ingrown toenails for example, it can worsen your quality of life and leave you in a lot of pain. Ingrown toenail surgery is probably the most common form of toenail surgery available, and over 10,000 people suffer from ingrown toenails every year in the UK alone. But it’s not all ingrown toenail surgery. You might also need toenail surgery if you’re suffering from a toenail infection or if your toe is swollen or inflamed, and if your symptoms don’t go away after a few days or after a course of antibiotics. Oh, and by the way, we can prescribe antibiotics for your podiatry requirements, so if you want a direct, quicker resolution, it’s best to go straight to a specialist like ourselves rather than your GP. We offer everything from nail removal surgery to nail avulsion surgery, ingrown toenail surgery and more, and we always ensure that there’s no infection after any toenail surgery thanks to the strict hygiene and safety standards we implement. How much does toenail surgery cost?Toenail surgery costs can vary depending on what you need, but at Teesside Podiatry Clinic, we charge a fixed price of £400. Within this, all follow-up appointments and dressing changes are included, as well as local anaesthetic administration during the procedure. We also offer a thorough discussion before anything is carried out, so you’re kept fully in the loop with regards to surgery, recovery times, and everything you need to know about your treatment. In addition to all of the above, our experts have the ability to send letters to employers just like a GP does, and we use advanced, M4 laser treatments to stimulate and speed up healing. We’ll also explore the different sports injuries that might require MSK therapy or treatment. Let’s start with what MSK refers to and what an MSK clinic actually is. What is an MSK Clinic?MSK is an abbreviation of musculoskeletal and refers to the body’s musculoskeletal system, which includes the muscles, bones, joints, limbs, and spine. An MSK clinic, then, is where you go if you’re in need of treatment for injuries to any of these areas. Which takes us on to our next question. What kinds of injuries do I need MSK therapy for?MSK treatment from a podiatrist can be required for a range of different sports injuries. These include everything from Morton’s Neuroma to Achilles tendinopathies, IT band syndrome, shin splints, runner’s knee, and more. If you aren’t sure what these feel like or whether you need to visit an MSK clinic for your sports injuries, visit our dedicated MSK treatment page to find out key information about each of them. When should I visit an MSK clinic? If you’re experiencing pain, tenderness, or burning sensations in any of your lower limbs, then it could be time to book an MSK appointment. A musculoskeletal consultant will be able to diagnose your symptoms in detail, and will also offer advice and treatments to help you recover. It's important not to ignore any of the above symptoms if you’re a runner or involved in any kinds of sports on a regular basis. If you do ignore them, your injury may get worse the more you use your foot, ankle, or lower limbs. It’s therefore vital you get these kinds of issues seen to as quickly as possible, so you don’t jeopardise your long term recovery. Where can I find an MSK specialist? At Teesside Podiatry Clinic, our MSK team are able to help with all kinds of MSK treatment requirements. With experience managing and treating various different sports injuries, our experts can help you get back on your feet without fear of further damage to your feet, ankle, or any of your lower limbs. To make things as simple as possible, you can also book an MSK appointment online. Which MSK treatments are offered at Teesside Podiatry Clinic?FMT, or foot mobilisation therapy, is one of the more popular treatments we offer as part of our MSK services. This involves MSK therapy sessions to treat joint misalignment and stiffness, as well as foot and ankle pain that may come from over exertion during sporting activities. We also offer footwear and inner sole advice, so you don’t suffer more injuries during exercise, in addition to computerised gait analysis. Here, we assess structural alignment and function of the foot, knee, hip, pelvis, and all lower limbs, offering advice and treatments to reduce the reoccurrence of any injuries. One of the more advanced MSK services we provide comes in the form of MLS class 4 laser treatments, which involves directing laser light energy onto damaged tissues to accelerate the healing process. It’s incredibly complex, technologically advanced stuff, and we’ve touched on it in more detail over on our MSK treatments web page. And finally, we also carry out combination treatments in our MSK clinic. These kinds of treatments combine a number of cutting edge technologies and techniques to get you on the mend as quickly as possible.
